our entryway.

our apartment - entryway Entryway is a word that allows for a bit of flexibility. And thank goodness. While it might connote for some the existence of an actual room, or at the least, a hallway, the word itself is simply defined as “a way in to somewhere or something.” Sounds so inviting, doesn’t it? No matter if all you have in the way of architecture is a door and a bit of wall space, an entryway you still have.

I have a little piece up on the West Elm blog Front + Main today: a few tips for creating a welcoming entryway, even in an apartment where one steps immediately into a space used equally as dining room, living room, and home office. In preparation for the post, West Elm gave me a few things to help gussy up the place. I added a new mirror to reflect light into a dark corner, a wire basket to wrangle winter hats, a picture ledge-turned-shelf for stashing keys and outgoing mail, and an apple crate for catching the shoes currently in rotation. All of the other bits and bobs are what we already had.

Head over to Front + Main for more photos of our space and my best nuggets for creating something out of nothing.

I apologize if you've done this and I missed it, but would you mind drawing a general layout of your apartment? It's so lovely, but I'm always confused about where your corners and spots are! Nothing too specific and no measuring tape, please!

    Thanks!

Thank you so much for this. We live in a small, post-war house that has no proper entry, front or back. I'm definitely going to use these tips.

I like the mirror, and I'll check out what you wrote on West Elm too. I like West Elm; I remembered what you said about buying nice towels in your video on your other apartment, and because of that I bought pretty towels from West Elm.

I love what you created here. Its in order and just right. I live in 300 square feet , my front door opens into my living room and dining area to but I have much less space to move about then you. My living room furniture has to be up against the door allowing only 2 feet of room to get in and out. This does give me ideas for my next rental.

Your apartment looks so cosy! I love the touches of red and the use of wood. I think an entryway should immediately make people feel at home and yours does just that. Beautiful!

I live in a studio apartment and when you walk in to the right is our bed, so it leaves only the left side to make it feel like an entryway. I like the look of the shoe box and the picture ledge so that I dont have to clog up the space with a big dresser. Our apartment is always constantly changing, with the seasons, the lighting and mostly my mood.
Thanks for sharing your home with us.

I'm wondering if you have any handy tips regarding hanging items. I live in an older, prewar building and get nervous regarding hanging shelving, etc in dry wall. Are there any items you use to ensure hanging security? Maybe this is something you don't even think about but I thought I'd ask!

I know it the bowl of apples might just be there cause of the small space, but I think this is a really clever idea, placing fruit near the exit. I always mean to take some fruit to work in the morning, but usually forget, definitely gonna try that.

I love what you've done with your entryway. So bright and cheery! May I ask, what is the plant on your lovely vintage stool?
