a series celebrating city life, in pictures.

begun in wilmington, north carolina in the spring of 2009, this series started in part as an antidote for the restlessness i felt living in a city far from friends and family, and in part as a reaction to the belief of many of my fellow city-dwellers that downtown wilmington was an unwelcoming place to live. for many it seemed the very word downtown seemed to connote danger.

that spring, in the afternoons after work, i would walk around the neighborhood and take photos of tiny details that made the city made unique and beautiful. i think of the series as a part of my continued belief that the best of life happens in the details.

i was so impressed by the power of these photographs to change my own perspective about the city, that i wanted to see what it would do for others. in summer 2009 i began a 'your downtown' series. generous and talented bloggers shared their downtowns here on reading my tea leaves.

my new downtown.
in the summer of 2010 when i moved to providence, rhode island to begin graduate school, i took the series with me and began to photograph my new city. graduate school has meant fewer posts, but sometimes still, when the impulse strikes, i take my camera out for a stroll about downtown.
