I really loved the Civil Eats/Rethink article in large part because they discuss all of the challenges faced (and overcome) with creating and sustaining a program like this. So many times, potential projects are dead on arrival because of challenges like these, and hearing how these obstacles were overcome is inspiring.

I know you are a label peeler. Do you peel your books too? Why do you think you do things like that? Why does it sooth you? I ask because I can relate. Perhaps these questions are peeling you back too much….too personal. I understand if you’d rather not go there. I also wonder if it’s hard to be “you” with kids in this way, or if you’re extra challenged by sharing with others that may not be the same. Also, if you’re worried or hopeful to rub off on them in regards to your need for simple, orderly and peeled life.

I love creating order of all kinds and for me that often comes in the form of unifying or simplifying my space. There are lots of moments in the day when our place is littered with a confetti of kid’s items, but together we participate in the cycle of making messes and cleaning them up. Impossible to know what kind of spaces my kids might prefer eventually, so I don’t worry about it much! We set an example of tidiness and we’ll see where that goes!

I love order too, and am often objecting to physical items because I think they are ugly. One reason I read this blog is because Erin is living my fantasy, seeming to have more control over her environment than I have had in most of my life so I enjoy it vicariously. It also gives me courage to be more accepting of my own quirks in this regard. I have always removed the dust jackets from my hardcover books much to the horror of those few people who know the dust jacket intact give a book more monetary value. Everyone else just wonders why I keep books or bother with hardcovers. I love to remove labels, particularly on visible items, and appreciate a clean aesthetic on kitchen storage jars. I saved a lot of peanut butter jars with plain white lids ( no longer being produced by that company ) and use them as storage for dry goods. I am also obsessed with natural materials and generally despise plastic.
Final thought: I love the scarf at the top of the page and have some serious scarf envy!

What a great list this week Erin, thank you.

Snow drops, swoon. We are still deeply buried in snow in Montana. It’s hard for me to even imagine green and petals after this winter.

Monica. She really deserves some compassion, imho. How far we have come in thinking about what happened to her since 1998. I am just a year older than she, was cradling my second baby in 1998, and I wish I could apologize and hug her. I had so much judgement for her lack of judgement, and I can see now that wasn’t the point at all. I was completely wrong, I think almost all of us were.

I would love to see the Rethink idea and the plastic free groceries (oh please please!) catch on.

That bandana, so adorable. I love that they modeled it on a dog ♥️ nobody wears bandanas better!
