my week in objects (mostly).

January 5, 2018

five little things that made my week.

1. these mended pants.

{because now they’re ready to start again.}

2. this scarf start.
{for slowly getting longer.}

3. these candles.

{because all i wanted for christmas were tapers enough to burn all winter. just didn’t know james was gonna make them himself.}

4. this snow.

{for creeping up the windowpane.}

5. this book.

{even though it cost me a good night’s sleep.}

other things:

you don’t need a daughter to want a better world.

extremely into this museum snowball fight.

old cross-stitch, new life.

embroidery of a different sort.

more about mending.

the ethical closet pyramid.Ā

salt sheds.

snow day reading.

    THANK YOU! For months I’ve been wanting to mend the holes in my most favorite shirt, and I couldn’t come up with the name of that mending technique to learn it. THANK YOU THANK YOU!

    How sweet. Did he dip them or use a mold? They’re perfect!

      He used a mold!

      • Reply Lisa January 7, 2018 at 11:44 pm

        Oh! I’m interested to know what kind/brand of mold! I would love to make more than pillar candles, but I’m afraid to dip. Thanks so much!

          Not sure which exactly, but I know he ordered supplies from Better Bee!

            THANK YOU! My daughter is thrilled and your hubby is so sweet to go to all the trouble of ordering supplies and making candles. So sweet…

    Seems like you’re all about a fresh start! I’ve never seen that kind of mending before – it’s an interesting idea, rather than hiding the change to embrace it! I love the closet pyramid – I have only bought things I 100% love over the past few years and it’s made such a difference to my wardrobe. No compromises!

      Yep! Reading about that museum snowball fight just made my day! And made me so glad I sent an end of year contribution to MCNY (even if it was teeny tiny!). My Week in Objects is such a great Friday destination — thank you!!

      The only one I know: basic knitting!

      • Reply Brooke January 11, 2018 at 3:10 pm

        Erin- can I ask how you took up knitting? Did you take a class or learn from a friend? I’d like to learn but the millions of Youtube videos is pretty daunting- I’d love to hear how you have done it. Thank you!

          Taught myself the most basic steps from the book Stitch n’ Bitch when I was college! (High school?) One of those!

      That’s called garter stitch – knit every row.

    I’ve been binge reading your blog and very much enjoying it. I know I encountered it before, perhaps a year ago but lost track of it. Glad I found it again; you have a lovely site, and although our lives are different in many ways, the desire for simplicity, quality and meaning is the same. All the best to you and your family for 2018!

    Thanks for the “snow day reading link, it looks like such a wonderful round up! I know some of the books in there (Unequal Childhoods was one of my absolute favorites from grad school) and am really looking forward to checking out some of the others.

    Thanks for the “snow day reading” links – “Simplicity Parenting” is excellent. I highly recommend it, especially chapter one on the importance of protecting children from adult concerns.
