make-believe: wedding guest.

9.13.2012

i love being a wedding guest. heck, i think i might even like being a wedding guest more than i liked being a bride. in any case, james and i are gearing up for our first post-marriage wedding in late october. one my dearest friends from high school is getting married to another friend from high school and we're pretty excited to catch up with old buddies. still, yours truly will be giving a reading (yet to be decided) and i have to admit, i'm a little nervous. the last time i spoke in front of half these people i was campaigning for class president. heh. if this entire outfit didn't cost nearly the amount of a month's rent in this tiny place, i would totally rock it. magic potions and amulet especially. sometimes a girl just wants to look good. and sometimes she needs a little magic on her side. you dig?*

1. dress 2. amulet necklace 3. moon flower essence 4. non-toxic polish 5. clutch 6. notebook 7. booties 8. ombré tights

*update: james says this outfit is not "weddingy" enough. poll? and where on earth does one find weddingy enough outfits that don't make one feel like barbie princess?

34 note(s) by friends.:

  1. It's a lovely a beautiful outfit for a nice dinner out or a family celebration. However, I would agree it's not weddingy enough. I have had some luck with bcbg, french connection, and even banana republic.

  2. I would look at www.modcloth.com. They have a great selection of dresses at all different price ranges. The outfit you picked is super cute though!

  3. hmm, I agree with James, it's a bit too casual. Maybe something more fitted, a bit more flashy, more bells and whistles.

  4. i agree with james too. this is an awesome fall outfit but not for a wedding.

  5. you guys! james is going to be *so* gleeful.

  6. I say I love it. But I think adding a small brimmed hat with a flower or 2 tucked in the hat band would make it more festive.

  7. I really love that amulet necklace. Mmm.

  8. I agree, too casual--maybe the shape? The sleeves and smocking?

  9. I think it's OK because it's silk (with jewel tones) and you will have some bling.

You will be fine with the reading, just go slowly and breathe :) !

  10. While this ensemble is VERY cute, I agree with James that it is not very wedding-y. It is a bit too casual. I think that you could do something in this silhouette if it was all one color and had some flashy details at the neckline (silk, satin, sequins, etc) and paired it with a daintier shoe, heel or flat.

  11. Oh my. The clutch and the journal...and the tunic. Okay, everything.

  12. I have a dress like that, and booties are just want I need! How chic and cute. xoxo

  13. i would wear this to dinner or even to work, but i must agree...the shape doesn't scream wedding :) have you tried anthropologie? i am doing a reading at a wedding coming up and plan to look there, especially as their sale rack transitions into fall. i'm hoping to get lucky :)

  14. I suppose it depends on the wedding, but I disagree with James and some of the comments. I think it looks great. Especially with the necklace. Although the boots are awesome if I wanted to dress it up, I'd change them before the dress. But really I don't think you even need to do that.

Great post to get discussion going. You're becoming quite the professional blogger!

  15. this looks so autumnal and cozy. with red nails and some jewellery it can look perfect for an autumn (cold) wedding.x

  16. I love it as an outfit, but I think I have to agree with some of the other commenters, and James, about wedding appropriate. Maybe if you even added some sort of belt to it. Or else something a little lighter in colour tone. Good luck!

  17. i'm sorry, i think it's a great outfit. it's great for fall. plus, i agree with the other readers, it depends on the type of wedding. you know your friends and if they would like it :) but i wouldn't discard it :)

  19. LOVE this- but for a wedding, brighter colors!!

  20. Pssh I totally disagree! This is terrific for a fall wedding (particularly a make believe one!) and long sleeved cocktail dresses are the best. Who want to worry about strapless bras and underarm shaving anyway??

  21. Such a cute dress and great for fall, but like Megan said before me it seems just a little too dark.

  22. Last year I went to a fall wedding wearing a belted maxi dress and dressy cardigan with boots. Adding in some sparkly jewelry and a clutch took it a bit fancier, and I was so comfy the whole night. A lot of guests (and even the bride) commented it was the perfect outfit for a fall wedding. You can wear less dressy things to a wedding, but the ensemble has to have a bit of luxe, and legnths have to be right. That dress, hemmed up to mid thigh and with long bare legs would look infinitely more fancy than it does now with dark tights. Another option would be opaque black tights and black heels- always a good look. Hope you have a good time!

  23. I love the outfit! It actually gives me ideas for an upcoming wedding in october as well!! Thank you!!

Have fun at your friend's wedding.

  24. I'm in desperate need of an outfit to wear to a casual outdoor wedding in late October and think this is perfect! My #1 priority is not being cold followed by #2 looking/feeling festive. I think this fits the bill for both. Sure, I could wear something more frilly, but then I would be cold and cranky. And what fun is that?

  25. I really like it for an autumn wedding, but I suppose it depends on the theme. If its indoorsy and glamorous then maybe it wouldnt be right. And also maybe a waist belt could smarten it up a little? And anyway, it would be better to buy an outfit that you would wear again than one you would only wear once, right?

  26. Erin, have you had a look at the dresses on asos.com?

  27. Well, the outfit depends on the style of wedding, doesn't it? I think this outfit would be totally appropriate for a fete that was casual, in a garden, at your friend's house. Plus, isn't the number one rule of wedding guest apparel to not outshine the bride or bridesmaids?

  28. It really depends what kind of wedding but I think this looks perfect for a Fall wedding!

  29. Going to weddings post-marriage feels amazing. You appreciate what went into the day and you feel sooooo relieved that you're done. I love it.

  30. Love the outfit!....but if you want a recommendation, check out etsy shop modaspia. I have several pieces from her and all are fabulous, beautiful and made in the states.

  31. If you wore nude nylons and heels vs. boots, it might be better? Otherwise, sadly yes, I would say not wedding-y enough. Love love love your blog, btw :) Congrats on YOUR wedding!!

  32. As your first wedding post marriage, everyone will be wondering if you're procreating yet... A smock dress will just add duel to the (inevitable, presumptuous) fire!

    ReplyDelete
  33. i think this look would be perfectly fine for a wedding! maybe adding a little belt would make it a bit more dressy/give it some body? i love it though

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the idea of this not being "wedding enough" is a little old-fashioned. It is seasonally appropriate, not too short or showy, and not white! so I think it's great if it looks great on you!
